Hi,
Just a bit of background. I'm from Auckland New Zealand. Member of the 'City Guard Club' in Freemans Bay.
http://www.cityguard.co.nz/forum/
Have been playing WHFB for around 5 years on and off now, mostly off. Found a great club so have been busy getting to a level where I can enjoy a couple of tournaments this year. I already have an almost completely painted HE army but after a swap n buy meet I discovered WE Warhawk Riders. Great looking models and I guess I had to start another army.
I already have a stack of army projects on the back burner. With Bretonians, O & G, Empire and a Chaos army in the back cupboard. So I've decided this might have to be a custom built ie: cheap as chips project.

Very tasty Warhawks that started this army build.

Image

With a large amount of my, never been used never will use HE archers and WE spares from fellow club members. I managed to start on a couple of units of Glade guard.

Image Image

1st Unit of 12 Glade Guard. The test colours of brown and green just didn't do it for me. So since then I have decided on a winter theme with kamo green and lightning blues.
I also found some real old 1 piece HE spearmen that I gonna have a go at chopping and converting. Will using them in most of the Eternal guards and maybe the heroes as well.

Image Image

BSB with Assorted scrounged parts and a start on a senic base. Also found some old models that will be cool spell singers.

I have always imagined an WE army to be the forest awakening to exact its vengeance. So My army will have lots of Dryads, Treekin and of course a Treeman.
So here begins their scratch building. Well the Treekin and the Treeman that is. Hopefully the Dryads i'll procure from Nik : )

Image Image

Treekin Elder and one of the four I will have in a unit. The heads will be sculpted on once I have all the models for the army together.

Once I decide on wether to use greenstuff or milliputt, the sprites and foliage will also follow. Anybody out there give me advice on other sculptable material.

The Treekin unit. C & C welcome : )

Very nice Tree Kin, I really like the feel of them. Are they built from plastic sprues? I have been using GS and copper wire armatures for my Tree Kin, but apparantly there are cheaper alternatives out there than GS that work just as well, so i guess it comes down to personal preference availability of materials and money :D

So with the new year comes a bit of inspiration for a Treeman.
Yes Skarlock, they are made of sprue. I find that the best vintage is the 2001 sprue. They plastic is great for cutting and softer than the new plastic they use now :)
Plus you don't get cheaper than cost nothing sprue, when it comes to a cheap as chips army :D

Would be really keen to see some of your work, Skarlock. Link pls :)

Treeman and to scale against a Treekin. Head to be added, foliage and sprites.

Again I am super impressed with your work!!! The Tree Man looks great!!! The leaves look fantastic, and the scale is right on!! You seem to be having the same thoughts as me about how to have a kick a@# army on a tight budget  One thing I am worried about and will have to ask at my local GW store is if you are allowed to use scratch built models in tournaments etc... or not

My Tree Kin are here

I'm liking the look of the WIP treekin and treeman - hope to see them in person one day when they are finished.

Thanks mate. Always good to get encouraging comments.

I'm pretty sure that you are not allowed scratch builds in GW tournies. I've been told that you are allowed builds if it contains a prominent % of GW figures in your conversion. Which is great because I'm going to have a dwarf later stomped under one foot of the treeman, Plus alot of the dryad accessories added to give character. Anyways everything in the conversion is 100% GW sprue, lol : )
Let me know if you find out exactly what the ruling is thks.

innovative and impressing.

I've got my fingers crossed that it turns out looking pretty cool as a finished mini. It's not looking too bad at the moment, but the hard part of sculpting the head is going to take a while.

Well Mikey if you're entering FluffyCon then you'll be facing my HE. This project I predict is gonna take a while.

Updates:

Scored my 3rd Warhawk and 2x units of Dryads in the weekend. So that means I may have a complete roster of minis. I know everyone here refrains from taking Warhawks but I just like the models too much.

Approx Army list 2000pts- 2500pts

Highborn
Noble
2 x spell singers
2x 12 GG
20 Eternal G
3 Warhawks
treeman
4 treekin
6 waywatchers
8 wardancers
2x 8 dryads
7 Wild riders
6 glade riders

Hope to have more pics up before the weekend : )

Cheers for all your C & C 's

When I was last at the City Guard, they were still downtown and I was play 40K with my Dark Eldar (back in 2002). Great work, inspires others. See if you can find something to enter in one of the Monthly Modelling Challenges.

Before my time sorry. Where abouts are you now? You should pop in for a game when you get a chance if you're still in the neighbourhood : )

I'll see what I can do, for sure.

Updates as promised before the weekend. Head took me ages to carve (bout 2hrs). Was fairly easy to finish, once I finally decided what it should look like. I've shaved quite a bit off the original as it just looked too 'fat' (about 3hrs of hum n harring).

Image Image

Treeman 80% finished. still requiring legs to be done, spites, vines etc with GS.

Image Image

Foliage with home made canopy. will have another canopy added once legs are carved on the left side of the model.
Its great to have got this done as now I know what I can do for the heads of the treekin. Always good to get a larger head done before starting the smaller treekin heads.

Hope you like, C & C welcome.

Cool! Shout out :D

Crash test dummies this post. I have started on the heads for the Treekin and need advice.

Image

Should their heads stay or go.I think they look a bit like kroot actually... hummm. They will have extra branches and twigs coming out of the back of their heads if I do stay with them.

Here are the four C & C would be very helpful : )

Bearing in mind that they will get GS sculpted details like tongues etc once they are ready.

Haven't done much lately on the modelling and painting front. Been playing a few games before Fluffycon, which is happening in 3 weeks time. It's the most gaming I have done for a while.

Have made a couple of models that I will be using as Branchwraiths.
Completely unfinished as always :smirk:

Image Image

Hope you like. I will start off the painting after Fluffycon aka Battlecry.

C & C always welcome.

WOW, great job on all the sculpting!!!
The Dryads look fantastic.
You asked for feed back on the Tree Kin heads, I would say at first glance that they are a little square looking. If I were you I would try and carve away some of the blockyness, everything else about the heads, their mouths, teeth, eyes etc... look awesome.
Keep up the motivation!! :D

Totally agree Skarloc. The heads have been redone and spites and vines have been added. My mem card reader on my comp is buggered so will post photos as soon as it's fixed. I've taken a break from this journal to finish my High elf army. I've finally managed to get into the tournament scene. The only semi painted army I have is HE. Come to think of it, I should do a journal for that army humm.

Well if that should cause terror on the battlefield, I want! Not really the look I was after, lucky theres alot more work needed on it before its go.

Iron Halo is running a painting competition which I took an interest. Here is the Dueling scene I came up with. Inspired by my 1st game aginst 7th ed O&G a few months back. Too bad none of my games against the WAAUGH have gone as swimmingly. Hope you guys enjoy. It was Speed painted as I thought I had only a couple of hours before the comp finished.
